There are a few things that I have learned over the last 18 (wow) years of doing portrait photography. One thing is that no one really likes to do family photos. It goes like this: Dad wants to be watching the game, the kids want to play and get out of the funky clothes, and mom is stressed that the photo shoot isn’t going to go well – but it’s my job to make everyone look relaxed and happy. Not to mention young, rested and beautiful. So when I can create a decent family photo, it’s gratifying. Sometimes I will look at it for days knowing how much went into it. Often I don’t get the enthusiastic “we love our family photo” until about 5 or 10 years down the road. That’s ok, it took me a while to understand that part, but I am the same way with photos of me and my family now. In fact, like many of us, I wish that I had suffered through more.
