Family Portraits

There are a few things that I have learned over the last 18 (wow) years of doing portrait photography.  One thing is that no one really likes to do family photos.  It goes like this: Dad wants to be watching the game, the kids want to play and get out of the funky clothes, and mom is stressed that the photo shoot isn’t going to go well – but it’s my job to make everyone look relaxed and happy.  Not to mention young, rested and beautiful.  So when I can create a decent family photo, it’s gratifying.  Sometimes I will look at it for days knowing how much went into it.  Often I don’t get the enthusiastic “we love our family photo” until about 5 or 10 years down the road.  That’s ok, it took me a while to understand that part, but I am the same way with photos of me and my family now.  In fact, like many of us, I wish that I had suffered through more.

I’m Back!

Lisa here – I went away for a while (figuratively), I think I need to do that once in a while – to rejuvenate.  Luckily my super-duper partner, Zoe, picked up the slack for me!  During my retreat I found a workshop in LA by Brooke Shaden and was very inspired.  She is an amazing photographic artist and person in general, check out her blog.  Can’t believe she is so young (24?) as she writes like she is a wise old soul.  It was exactly what I needed.  I know I have told everyone that I am retiring (again),  but I think there are a few more things that I want to do before I hang up my photo hat. (thanks Brooke!)  I guess that’s the thing with photography, and especially with digital, there are endless possibilities with what you can do and learn.  I don’t have any images to post yet – but stay tuned – hopefully soon.  In the meantime, I will try to make up for some lost time by showing some shots from the last few months.  More cute kids!….  (what gorgeous eyes!)Solana Beach Photography

save “fancy” for what?

britt got her fancy holiday dress today.  she wanted to wear it immediately and of course my first thought was “no…wait…you’ll get it dirty…and then what?”  so i forced myself to say “of course.  wear it!  have fun in it!  feel good it in for more than one day.  feel like the beautiful four-year old that you are….”  besides – who needs to save “fancy” for just one day? (ps – i am cheating again, lifted this from my jewelry blog…)
